Accordion Books
The children constructed these accordion books from a variety of materials including handmade and origami papers, old stamps, Chinese newspapers and transfer letters.

Andy Goldsworthy project
After discussing the work of Scottish environmental artist, Andy Goldsworthy, the children collected natural objects and created their own art from their found items. When they were finished they took turns photographing their work.

Crayon Batik
These muslin batiks were created by painting with melted crayons and paraffin. Using crayons allowed the children to achieve a variety of colors even though they used only one dye bath.

Sculpture
Inspired by the work of Swiss artist, Alberto Giacometti, the children created their own elongated figures. They carefully considered pose and gesture. The sculptures were constructed from clay and/or aluminum foil over wire frames.

Head Collage
After looking at collage work of famous pop artists, students cut out their silhouettes and filled them with magazine images of some of the things that go on in their heads.

Frames
We discussed the work of Frida Kahlo, especially her painting "The Frame". Then the kids made their own self portraits within a frame of tooled and painted aluminum.

Manna House
These huge batiks were the result of a group effort. The children designed them specifically to hang in the Manna House, which is a daytime refuge for the homeless.

Pinhole Cameras
These photographs were taken by the middle schoolers with pinhole cameras they constructed out of Quaker oatmeal boxes. They processed and printed the work themselves.
