Maria Montessori began her journey to rejuvenate childhood education more than 100 years ago. Since then, her method has grown into a movement, boasting approximately 4,500 Montessori-style schools in the U.S. and an estimated 20,000 throughout the world. Her ideas not only sparked the Montessori method, but her influence can be seen throughout traditional classrooms as well.

One thing that Montessori schools are known for is their approach to group learning. Montessori classrooms group students together in three-year age brackets compared to traditional classrooms where students are generally the same age. Also unlike traditional classrooms, Montessori guides stay with their students for three-year increments instead of rotating after a subject is finished or a school year has come to a close.

In recent years, we’ve seen traditional schools adapt so teachers and student groups can stay together for multiple school years. What are the benefits of staying with a teacher for more than one school year? The relationship between students and teacher blossoms, while trust and respect deepen between teacher, student and parents. Teachers are able to better understand student habits, which better meets each child’s unique education need. Students also feel more comfortable with someone they have spent more with, making them more apt to ask questions if they feel confused or have an issue.

Maria Montessori’s legacy continues to serve as a light and inspiration for childhood education. If you have questions regarding our program here at Maria Montessori School, feel free to reach out or visit our website.
