Maria Montessori’s teaching technique may appear different, especially to parents and caretakers who were educated in traditional American schools. But the vision behind the Montessori Method is to instill lifelong lessons that children will use throughout their education, career and life. To further explain the vision, we provided a few key quotes from Maria Montessori that summarize her thoughts behind her education methodology.

1. “We must help the child to act for himself, will for himself, think for himself; this is the art of those
who aspire to serve the spirit.”

Most school environments promote lecture, repetition and application. Montessori believed this process could
deplete the genuine curiosity and amazement of learning, and that a child’s inclined curiosity and wonderment
is what leads them to want to learn more. By fostering an environment that plays into the child’s natural
inclinations, a spirit for learning and discovery is kept alive and active in a way that children see as fun and
productive. This creates a space where learning and exploration are cherished.

2. “An education capable of saving humanity is no small undertaking; it involves the spiritual development of man, the enhancement of his value as an individual, and the preparation of young people to understand the times in which they live.”

One element of the method is that imagination is based in reality. That may sound counterintuitive, but the answer to solving world problems relies on our creativity and ability to solve problems with what’s in front of us. Children have amazing minds that are ready to learn about things that will prepare them for the future, which is why we need them to be creative and develop an understanding of the world we live in. The leaders of tomorrow must have realistic materials to learn today.

#3. “We then become witnesses to the development of the human soul; the emergence of the New Man,
who will no longer be the victim of events but, thanks to his clarity of vision, will become able to direct
and to mold the future of mankind.”

This quote perfectly sums up Montessori’s ultimate vision – serving the spirit instills a love for lifelong learning.
A passion for learning new things continues throughout a child’s life because of what and how they learned as
a child, allowing them to mold their future how they see fit. We want to ensure that children are prepared and
capable to take on the responsibility of leading our world in the future.
