Summer break is a time for relaxation, travel and outdoor activities! We want everyone to enjoy their time off, but summer can easily get kids out of their normal routine and stall academic growth. Summer learning loss is a widely debated concept – however, whether you believe in the “summer slide” or not, continuing instruction at home is always beneficial for students. Here are some tips for incorporating the Montessori Method in your own home for your children to continue learning.

Prepare the environment

Dr. Montessori stressed the importance of a “prepared environment.” This means having certain toys and items in a specific spot for students to recognize. Everything has its own place and is ready for the child to find and dive into on their own terms. Keeping toys and learning materials organized will encourage them to reach out and choose the learning activity that interests them most.

Get moving

Movement and exploration are two vital components of Montessori philosophy. Aim to get outside and move for at least one hour a day to strengthen your child’s memory, perception, language, attention, emotion and decision-making skills. Running around outside also lets children explore their natural surroundings. Take a nature walk and look at different plants and wildlife around your area. Students’ natural curiosity will strengthen their mind and keep them engaged in learning new things!

Make chores fun

In Montessori environments, children are held responsible for cleaning up after themselves and upkeep of the space. Maintain this routine at home by involving your child in household tasks. This is a win-win situation for you and your child, as you get help around the house and they will exercise their brain. Sorting laundry, assisting in the kitchen and gardening are just a few of the many activities students can accomplish to stay sharp.
